Basic Rough Ground Rig

Basic Rough Ground Rig

This is the simplest of rigs designed for fishing very rough ground. It is made with a minimum of components so that it is extremely cheap to produce and the costs do not mount up if a large number of rigs are lost to snags. Money is saved by omitting the trapped swivel and replacing it with a dropper knot and further savings are made by not using a Gemini Breaker but instead using a simple rotten bottom weak link clip. Due to the fact that this rig uses dropper knots which are not as strong as trapped swivels and rotten bottom clips (which rely on gravity to hold the weight in place) only simple overhead casts should be used with this rig, and it is also potentially dangerous to use this rig in a busy or crowded area. The basic rough ground rig, therefore, is best suited to use in remote rock marks which give way to deep water, negating the need for long-range casting.

Components needed to make this rig:

  • Large swivel x 1
  • Rotten bottom weak link clip x 1
  • Size 2/0 hook x 1
  • 60lb line
  • 20lb snood line
  • 10 – 15lb monofilament (for weak link)
