Roundfish

As described in the section on Identifying UK Sea Fish, roundfish are fish which are round in the cross section and have a body which tapers to a tail – a typical fish shape in other words. Roundfish is a wide-ranging term which includes some of the most common fish found in UK waters (mackerel, whiting and wrasse) and some of the most sought after by anglers such as bass and cod. All of the roundfish in this section come into relatively shallow water and can be caught by sea anglers around the UK with some regularity. Other roundfish which prefer deeper water and are not commonly caught from the shore – such as haddock and ling – are listed in the Offshore and Deeper Water Fish section.
